... is a science fiction novel by Sir Arthur C. Clarke.
It was originally published in 1953, and a version with
a new first chapter was released in 1990 due to the
anachronistic nature of the opening chapter (the first
attempts to launch rockets into orbit by both the
Americans and Russians are in progress but aborted
suddenly when aliens arrive, with a sense of the death
of a dream). This story was originally a short story
dubbed Guardian Angel which Clarke first published in
1950 for the Famous Fantastic Mysteries magazine.
It is basically the novel's section after the prologue,
Earth and the Overlords but with some different text
in certain places.

Childhood's End is about humanity's transformation
and integration to an interstellar hive mind,
the Occult, man's inability to live in a utopian
society, cruelty to animals, and the idea of being
"The Last Man on Earth". The 1953 edition of the
story begins when enormous alien spaceships one day
appear above all of the Earth's major cities.
The aliens, who become known as the Overlords,
quickly communicate by radio, announcing benign
intention and desire to help mankind. They quickly
end the arms race and colonialism. They also arrange
personal, though not face-to-face, meetings between
Secretary General of the United Nations Rikki Stormgren
and Karellen, the Overlord leader, albeit via two-way
mirror, so that the earthman cannot see the
extraterrestrial alien. Karellen has a special
relationship with Stormgren, though short of
traditional friendship. The Overlords promise to
reveal themselves in fifty years, after which time
mankind will have lost their prejudice, becoming
comfortable with their presence. Mankind enters a
golden age of the greatest peace and prosperity
ever known, but at the expense of some creativity
and freedom; not every Earthling is content with
the bargain, nor accepts the beneficence of the
Overlords' long-term intentions. Although Stormgren,
with Karellen's help, survives kidnap by subversive
humans suspicious of the Overlords, he secretly
harbours lingering curiosity about the real Overlord
nature and smuggles a device aboard Karellen's
spaceship to see behind the screen. Yet, he later
tells questioners the device failed; the novel
strongly hints that Stormgren agrees with the
Overlords that mankind are unready for what he
saw revealed. True to their word, fifty years
after arrival, the Overlords appear in person.
They are beings resembling the traditional human
folklore image of demons: bipeds with large wings,
horned heads, and tails. The Overlords are taller
than humans and of proportionally more massive
bodies covered with a hard, black armour shell.
They are greatly photosensitive to yellow sunlight,
because they are from a planet with a dimmer
light spectrum, and, though they can breathe
Earth air, they prefer their own specific
atmosphere gas. Mankind accept them with open arms,
and with their help, create an utopian world.
Although humanity and the Overlords are in good
relations, the spread of equal goods and the ban
on building space ships that can travel past the
moon causes sects of humanity to believe their
innovation and independence is being stagnated.
In response, those sects establish the New Athens
island colony.

After one hundred years on earth, human children
(starting in New Athens) begin displaying
telepathic and telekinetic abilities. Because of
that, they soon become distant from their parents.
Karellen then reveals the true purpose of why the
Overlords came to Earth. They are in service to
the Overmind, an amorphous being of pure energy.
It has charged them with the duty of fostering
humanity's transition to a higher plane of
existence and merger with the Overmind. Also,
the Overlords' resemblance to the devil of human
folklore is explained with the concept of racial
memory unlimited by humanity's linear concept
of time; hence, fear of them was based upon
instinct, the foreknowledge that they herald
the end of the human species. Karellen announces
that the children will be quarantined on a
continent of their own and because of them, all
hopes of humanity are over because it will only
be the children who will merge with the Overmind.
The Overlords are also shown to be trapped in an
evolutionary dead end who will never merge with
the Overmind, and thus are doomed to forever
do its bidding. Because of this, Karellen states
his race will forever envy humanity. Despite how
the Overlords are trapped in their current forms,
Karellen hopes that his race will learn what
causes the stage that will be taken by the
Overmind and that eventually his race will
discover how. Following the quarantine, no more
children are born; the narration subtly hints
that most of the parents commit suicide, while
their children evolve towards merging with the
Overmind. New Athens is then destroyed by the
leaders detonating a nuclear bomb on it.
The last man alive is Jan Rodricks, a physicist,
who will witness mankind's final evolutionary
transformation. He stowed away on an Overlord
supply ship earlier in the story in a successful
attempt to travel to the Overlord home planet,
which he correctly guessed orbits a star of the
Carina constellation. As a physicist, Rodricks
knows of the relativistic twin paradox effect:
however brief the round trip to the Overlord
planet is in his subjective, personal time-frame,
the shortest time elapsed on planet Earth, for
a "twin" person of the same age, would be the
round trip light-travel time. Given that the
Overlord planet is forty light-years distant,
at least eighty years elapsed on Earth before
his return (eighty years is the lower limit,
the actual time is longer). Therefore, when
Rodricks returns from the Overlord home world,
he expects no one on Earth will remember him,
nevertheless, he is unprepared for the return:
mankind, as he knew it, died. About three
hundred million naked young beings, physically
human but otherwise with nothing common to Man,
remain on the quarantined continent. They are
the final, physical form of human evolution
before merging with the Overmind. Life -- not
only human life, but all other forms on the
planet -- was exterminated by them, and the
vast cities that Jan remembers are all dark,
worldwide. Although no human beings remain on
Earth, some Overlords remain, studying the
evolved children. The two whom Rodricks knows
are Karellen and Rashaverak; they expected
his return. They briefly remain after Rodricks's
return, trying to understand mankind's
transformation, which is denied to their race
despite its great achievements in other realms.
It also is revealed here that the Overlords
have met and conditioned other races for the
Overmind, and that humanity is the fifth race
the Overmind will collect. When the evolved
children exploit their powers -- altering the
Earth's rotation, effecting other, dangerous
planetary adjustments -- making it too
dangerous to remain, the Overlords prepare
to leave. They offer Rodricks the opportunity
of leaving with them, but he chooses to
remain as witness to Earth's dissolution;
mankind's offspring evolved to a higher
existence, requiring neither a body nor a
place, so ends mankind's childhood.
The story's last scene details Karellen's
final backward look, through space, at the
doomed Solar System. He is emotionally
depressed, having seen yet another race
evolve to the beyond, while he and his race
are limited to their current form. Despite
that, he renders a final salute to mankind,
considering whether or not conditioning them
for the Overmind helped his goal of
deciphering the evolutionary secret for his
race to merge with the Overmind. He then
turns away from the view, the reader presumes,
to await the Overmind's next order.

a Machian hypothesis. Unless you've

i did not mean thermonuclear fusion. In any situation if you increase the negative binding energy you decrease positive mass and release positive energy. This is generally true so that Jim's scheme is "chemical fusion".

The Newtonian argument applied to masses of elementary particles is complete nonsense for several reasons.

1) you cannot use a cosmological argument at the scale of elementary particles without justification.

Metrics are scale-dependent. In Jim's case we have a discrepancy of about 40 powers of ten.

2) the cosmological metric is not

g00 = 1 - 2GMc^2/r etc.

Therefore, it's completely wrong to use

2GMuniverse/c^2RHubble = 1

phi = 2GMuniverse /RHubble  = c^2

and then argue that by a vague miracle

phi determines the masses of leptons and quarks.

That's completely illogical in my opinion.

Indeed, a much more accurate metric for our FUTURE universe is

g00 = 1 - /\r^2

where we are at r = 0

/\ = 1/RHubble^2

In fact the large-scale metric of our universe is complicated given numerically by Tamara Davis here

This is not warp drive at all. Jim need to accelerate objects off timelike geodesics.
Even a propellentless engine can still be a off-geodesic "rocket" without stuff ejected.
It's not warp drive unless he means some piece of the ship is oscillating inside it generating a warp for the ship as a whole?

A follow-on experiment to that
reported at STAIF 2004 is described. An effect
of the sort expected continues to be observed.
And it displays scaling behavior distinctive
to Mach effects.

ASSESSING POTENTIAL PROPULSION BREAKTHROUGHS

ABSTRACT

The term, propulsion breakthrough, refers to
concepts like propellantless space drives and
faster-than-light travel, the kind of
breakthroughs that would make interstellar
exploration practical. Although no such
breakthroughs appear imminent, a variety of
investigations have begun. From 1996-2002, NASA
supported the Breakthrough Propulsion Physics
Project to examine physics in the context of
breakthrough spaceflight. Three facets of these
assessments are now reported: (1) predicting
benefits, (2) selecting research, and (3) recent
technical progress.  Predicting benefits is
challenging since the breakthroughs are still
only notional concepts, but energy can serve as
a basis for comparison. A hypothetical space
drive would require many orders of magnitude
less energy than a rocket for journeys to our
nearest neighboring star. Assessing research
options is challenging when the goals are beyond
known physics and when the implications of
success are profound. To mitigate the challenges,
a selection process is described where:
(a) research tasks are constrained to only
address the immediate unknowns, curious effects
or critical issues, (b) reliability of assertions
is more important than their implications , and
(c) reviewers judge credibility rather than
feasibility . The recent findings of a number of
tasks, some selected using this process, are
discussed. Of the 14 tasks included, 6 reached
null conclusions, 4 remain unresolved, and 4 have
opportunities for sequels. A dominant theme with
the sequels is research about the properties of
space, inertial frames, and the quantum vacuum.

Warp Drive: A New Approach

Abstract:

   Certain classes of higher dimensional models
suggest that the Casimir Effect is a candidate
for the cosmological constant. In this paper we
demonstrate that a sufficiently advanced
civilization could, in principal, manipulate
the radius of the extra dimension to locally
adjust the value of the cosmological constant.
This adjustment could be tuned to generate an
expansion/contraction of spacetime around a
spacecraft creating an exotic form of
field-propulsion. Due to the fact that spacetime
expansion itself is not restricted by relativity,
a faster-than-light 'warp drive' could be created.
Calculations of the energy requirements of such
a drive are performed and an 'ultimate' speed limit,
based on the Planckian limits on the size of the
extra dimensions is found.

   Fair enough Jack.  As I said, in the pre-inflation
era this was common knowledge, ensconced, for example,
in the title of Weinberg's popular book on cosmology
"the three pound universe" and the like (if memory serves).  
I got rid of those sorts of books several years ago, so I
can't give exact references.  But Jeremy Bernstein's book
on cosmology has the related math, so I'll copy a few
pages of that and provide a little commentary.
 Tomorrow with a little luck. . . .

Mach's principle is the proposition that inertial frames
are determined by matter. We put forth and implement a
precise correspondence between matter and geometry that
realizes Mach's principle.  Einstein's equations are not
modified and no selection principle is applied to their
solutions; Mach's principle is realized wholly within
Einstein's general theory of relativity. The key insight
is the observation that, in addition to bulk matter, one
can also add boundary matter.  Given a space-time, and
thus the inertial frames, we can read off both boundary
and bulk stress tensors, thereby relating matter and
geometry. We consider some global conditions that are
necessary for the space-time to be reconstructible, in
principle, from bulk and boundary matter.  Our framework
is similar to that of the black hole membrane paradigm
and, in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space-times, is
consistent with holographic duality.

For example, I struggled a bit to
wake up this morning from a vivid
dream of a 'mind' trapped in a head
with no body or sensory apparatus,
with a question that was roughly:
"How would the 'first gender' deal
with the 'last couple?'" It seemed
to be a dream of a distant future
where 'human' sentient consciousness
resides in various permutations of
mind only bodilessness, and dual-linked
configurations (couples), that
exist in the aforementioned state of
both minds with and without bodies.
It was a highly unpleasant, very
nuanced, unfamiliar terrain of extreme
strangeness, possessing a trapped-like
quality of awareness. Now, was this
an expression from a CTC (closed
timelike curve) conveying information
to the past (my NOW) about the
existential horrors innate to self-aware
artificial intelligences, and/or the
experiential quandaries of radical
bio-engineered mutational sentient mind
states?  Or, do I simply miss my
Beloved Former Spousal Unit [BFSU],
whom I have not seen for some time?
Or, is my recent preoccupation with AI,
Parallel Realities, and a dim-witted
understanding of quantum mechanics
mixing in with all of the above
(and below), neurologically
orchestrating the illusion of
transtemporal info blur, coupled with
a preexisting susceptibility to actual

Recently, the quantum information
processing power of closed timelike
curves have been discussed.
Because the most widely accepted
model for quantum closed timelike
curve interactions contains
ambiguities, different authors have
been able to reach radically
different conclusions as to the
power of such interactions.
By tracing the information flow
through such systems we are able to
derive equivalent circuits with
unique solutions, thus allowing an
objective decision between the
alternatives to be made. We conclude
that closed timelike curves, if they
exist and are well described by these
simple models, would be a powerful
resource for quantum information
processing.

classical correlations are determined by
local hidden variables, i.e. the classical
parameters that determine the configuration
of the experimental apparatus. The CTC can
create copies of these parameters because
they are available locally. In contrast an
entangled state can not be described by such

"samples" one arm of the entangled state it
cannot reproduce the non-local correlations
of the other arm. Bennett et al. call the
ambiguity with respect to mixed states in
Deutsch's formalism the "linearity trap" and
suggest it should be resolved by insisting
that "the evolution of a nonlinearly evolving
system may depend on parts of the universe
with which it does not interact". Our analysis
of the information flow of systems that
include CTCs comes to the opposite and more
pragmatic conclusion that the evolution of a
nonlinearly evolving system may only depend
on parts of the universe with which it
directly interacts.
In particular, non-local correlations, as
produced by entanglement, do not correspond
to direct interactions. We note that this is
more in keeping with the local character
of general relativity. [...]

computational basis Alice can now predict
perfectly whether Victor handed her a zero
or anti-diagonnal qubit thus deterministically
differentiating non-orthogonnal states as

A criticism that could be leveled at these
calculations... is that they use
non-relativistic quantum mechanics in spite

are physical circuits, the inclusion of qubit
dynamics or more general field states and

laboratory, thus allowing experimental
simulations of interesting CTC interactions.

contemplation of humans as blameless concoctions
of organic chemicals stuck in a web of
impersonal forces. Because you cannot have
heroes without a powerful adversary, paranoia
is virtually de rigeur in great literature.
In recent times extraterrestrials have joined
the pantheon of gods, demons, superior races,
secret societies, and power elites which have
been pulling the strings.

It would not surprise me if stories of
extraterrestrials messing with men's minds
pre-date our century, but the earliest
instance I've seen is in H.P. Lovecraft's
1928 work The Call of Cthulhu. It speaks of
a race called the Great Old Ones which
came from the stars and spoke to men by
"molding their dreams". The emergence of
Cthulhu from beneath the seas is accompanied
by sensitive individuals going mad. The cult
which sought to liberate him warned he would
bring the Earth beneath its sway.
A first appearance in Lovecraft's corpus
would be appropriate given the mechanistic
supernatural perspective that he consciously
cultivated of a cosmos totally indifferent
to the wants and ultimate welfare of
mosquitoes, pterodactyls, fungi, men,
trees or other forms of biological energy.

whirling masses, creating magnificent patterns,
colorful disks, or iridescent globules; stimulating
all manner of internal, dramatic events. We enjoy our
positions of detached clarity, seldom, if ever,
becoming involved in any of the events we observe.
I, however, appear to be the rare exception to
this informal rule.

Perhaps my not so detached laughter lacks the
radiant gusto of the others specifically because
this current state of being (or non being) is a
recent one to me; hence, atavistic fragments or
relative attachments may continue to linger.
Also, I find it so fascinating and tragic to
watch what I call "their brief gyrations."
All those agitated, ephemeral little entities:
condensed sorrow and small joy, endlessly
springing up out of the vortex, around and
about, then disappearing equally sudden and
mysterious. Ah, such pathos... I really cannot
help it. I do seem to get involved, though I
never interfere, relishing as I do the exquisite
sensations accompanying our practice of
absolute restraint.

On the other hand, there is one particularly
obscure "Event Drama" which has been profoundly
absorbing to my attention lately, and I do
believe that I may have some mysterious
involvement there which I think I shall attempt
to concretize for you by focusing upon one of
Ouroboros' multifarious, luminous segments.

  I deliver myself to the task and
  thereby lose sight of our expanse.

   Space and time are singularized, folded
and stretched.  A glistening, infinite sword
forged on a terrible searing anvil.
The infinitesimal filaments approach incandescence
as they are pulled and spun. The fabric is cut.

a.c. and d.c. Josephson effects in a BEC of
rubidium atoms. Here we present the experiment,
its results, and some of the theory behind it.

Introduction

  What are the a.c. and d.c. Josephson Effects?
When two superconductors are joined together,
separated only by a thin insulating barrier,
some new phenomena arise. First, if a voltage
is applied across the junction, a small
oscillating current starts flowing back and
forth through the junction, without equilibrating
the two sides. This is known as the a.c. Josephson
effect. Second, if a constant current is made to
flow through the junction, no voltage drop is
detected across it, as long as the current stays
below some critical value. This is known as the
d.c. Josephson effect. Accordingly, the setup of
a superconductor-insulator-superconductor is
known as a Josephson junction.

The phenomena of the a.c. and d.c. Josephson effects
manifest because of the quantum nature of each
superconductor as a whole. Quantum mechanics usually
apply to systems at the microscopic level. However,
in superconductors, the many electrons in the metal

principle to observe the a.c. and d.c. Josephson
effects in any two macroscopic quantum systems
separated by a tunneling barrier.

In 1997, the a.c. Josephson effect was observed
in superfluid 3He. Superfluid 3He is another
example of a system where quantum phenomena manifest
macroscopically. In 3He, it is the helium atoms that
form the quantum state, and the current is not of
electrical type, but the flow of atoms through a
thin hole separating two helium reservoirs.
The d.c. Josephson effect in superfluid 3He,
and both a.c. and d.c. effects in superfluid 4He,
have not yet been observed.

What is a Bose-Einstein Condensate?

  Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is a state of
matter where, due to the laws of quantum mechanics,
all the particles constituting the matter are coerced
into a single quantum state of the lowest energy,
reshaping themselves as a single entity.

This new form of matter was predicted by
Satyendra Nath Bose and Albert Einstein in 1925.
In the following years, it was established that
superfluids and superconductors are a form of
BECs, but an 'ideal' BEC of weakly-interacting
atoms, corresponding to the original theory,
required extremely low temperatures, less than
millionth of a degree above the absolute zero.
Only in 1995 were scientists able to produce a
BEC from a gas of dilute atoms, 70 years after
its prediction.

Bose-Einstein condensates provide a rich ground
for the testing of fundamental physics, of which

1) the effects are very short lived.

2) no measurement detectors of the required type are deployed. If you
do not seek you will not find.

3) no device using reactance near fields has yet been constructed to
my knowledge.

4) remember I am talking about ELF LC circuits with capacitor fillings
made of the right kind of meta-materials yet to be designed.

I think I can safely say that no experiments conceived of to date are
relevant to what I am talking about. The atomic gas BECs do not have
the quasi static EM near fields I am talking about in them.

But that may just be a result of no one looking for the sort of
effects in question.  The way to look would seem to be to watch
light propagation in the vicinity of the BECs, not in the BECs
themsleves.

NO!  Again Jim does not get that I am not talking about real photons
in propagating light beams. I am talking about maybe 60 Hz near
induction fields in a specially made capacitor in an LC circuit. I
don't expect light propagation would show any significant effect.

The basic source term I am talking about is

light propagation irrelevant - at best it might produce a very weak
short gravity wave pulse analogous to what Ray Chiao has proposed.

This is just straight-forward interferometry.  You can do this,
believe it or not, using garden variety laser pointers, though you'd
probably want something a little fancier, if only to suppress the
giggle factor.  In the BECS, if Jack is right, spacetime is
radically different from outside.  The transition can reasonably be
expected to extend beyond the BECs themselves.  So that's what you
would look for.


Yes, you might be able to detect a very weak TRANSIENT HFGW gravity
distortion field that way at 10^15 Hz far field, that would never be
strong enough for any propulsion - in my intuitive opinion.

Sarfatti's Conjecture - HFGWs induced by real photons can't compete
with LFGW from virtual photons in macro-quantum coherent Glauber state
inductive reactance near field configurations in terms of practical
low power warp drive applications.

In the metamaterial area, likewise there are problems.
Metamaterials were first successfully made for RF fields using
small pieces of wire and metal.  They have recently been extended
into the optical regime using smaller and smaller structures.
Jack's problem is the opposite as he wants ELF to DC metamaterials.
By a simple scaling argument, the size of the engineered structures
should be very large.  VERY large.

No, Jim is completely wrong here because he keeps thinking on REAL
PHOTONS where f = ck. He does not get that f =/= ck for inductive near
fields e.g. the static Coulomb field has f = 0 with a whole spectrum
of k',s i.e. spatial Fourier transform of 1/r.

Therefore, we can have f ---> 0 with k ---> inifinity in the inductive
near field. It is not true at all that low frequency near fields
require large wavelengths - that is only true for the transverse
polarized far radiation fields!

This suggests that another approach to ELF metamaterials needs to be
found.  Presumably, though, it should be possible to make such
material, if they can be made at all, with fairly common and cheap
materials.  We're not talking element 115 here.  Fabrication
problems perhaps.  But not prohibitively expensive materials.

Let's say Jack, or one of his friends, hits upon a way to make an
ELF or DC metamaterial capacitor.  It there a simple way to test it?
Yes, but it isn't by weighing it, for while in the on state it will
be repelled by the Earth, it will move in the opposite direction (in
accordance with the EEP).  The way to test it is on a thrust balance
of the sort I've been working with for years.  You simply make the
capacitor part of a system with another mass a small distance from
it.  Turn it on, and the pair of masses should self-accelerate.
Easily measured with a thrust balance.  No elaborate, deeply
expensive, hard to obtain equipment needed.  It would be trivial for
me to do with the system on hand.

So, the simplest test of Jack's ideas is for him to design an ELF to
DC metamaterial capacitor that I can then put on the thrust balance.
The other thing to do is see if the Harvard folks can be convinced
to look for local spacetime distortions in the vicinity of the BECs
in their system.  That means rigging an interferometer so that one
of the paths passes close the a BEC.  Neither of these tests should
be prohibitively expensive or difficult to do.  The hard part is
designing the metamaterial capacitor.  This is Jack's proposal.
That's his job.

Jack while I believe you, Jim has some real genius when it comes to
inexpensive work-arounds.  If only the material is the issue, and
for instance all you need is a remote DC power control, seems to me
possible one could scavenge an RC receiver and electronic motor
control, batteries, transmitter, etc.  I have a decent selection I
could offer.  If all you then need is the material, and a capable EE
to spend just a few hours, might not be too much to ask the people
at LockMart if they have an interest, etc.  What is the material
needed?  How is it formed, chemical vapor deposition?  Does it
require DC?

If Jim thinks there's a cheap solution, I'd certainly like to hear
about it.

their light.

So why does this show time travel is
impossible? Smolyaninov says that while
light rays can be curved and appear to

be in a time-like dimension when they
do so. And any light ray traveling in
a time-like dimension would not be able

On the outskirts of a city there's a reservoir in a
watershed among hills and trees. Sometimes late at night,
I'll drive along the narrow winding road just to see the
wildlife that comes out: owls, raccoons, foxes, bobcats,
skunks, but mostly deer come out to wander near the road's
edge. I always drive the posted 25 MPH speed limit because
I'm never in a hurry on this heavily populated watershed
at night under the trees, clouds and stars. Sometimes along
the shoulder a deer will watch the oncoming headlights.
I always lower my highbeams for their eyes as if they are
drivers themselves. Occasionally, I get a sense that they
register something otherworldly in their experience, as a
pair of lights approach, dim, pass by with a whoosh of air
and Doppler shifting receding sound.
I'm almost willing to say that there are some deer who
specifically settle in on this road's edge just to see the
night lights.  Not everyone drives the speed limit, the
results are saddening but fortunately rare in number, and
roadkill is quickly consumed.
The deer that do play this game of observation intrigue me.
I wonder what occurs for them neurologically, physiologically,
to see these strange lights at night? If they could somehow
integrate the sensory awareness of another species' technology
into their lives, how would they do it? What tools would they
employ to even remember?
I suspect they would be confined to using only the tools of
their own world; not the tools of halogen bulbs, direct
current, transmissions, and auto manufacturers.
The raccoons, however, I think might be up to something,
what with their opposable thumbs and secretive,

Meanwhile...

I was recently thinking about the 'vow'
that a Bodhisattva makes. A somewhat daunting,
down right terrifying sort of vow, to renounce
nirvana, final extinction, etc. for the sake of
any and all remaining conscious sentient beings
trapped in unrelenting cyclic bondage to material
reality - to remain in the cycle to help them out
of the cycle, a concept in itself, perhaps, a bit
narcissistic if it isn't truly 'selfless', which
raises all sorts of complicated psychological
meanderings of the mind. Years ago, in my mind's eye,
I imagined a short story (never wrote anything down)
about a truly ancient Bodhisattva who had returned
so many gawd damn times to whatever hell hole existence
that was populated by stubborn sentient beings, that
he (or she) was a bit frayed around the edges, worn out,
tired, having second, third, etc. thoughts about the
'old vow', thinking maybe about 'blowing off the whole
enterprise' to youthful-soul folly, wondering maybe
about forgetting the 'vow' and moving on. I think I
placed this tired Bodhisattva as the owner of a coin-
operated Laundromat in a dingy city. I don't recall
if it had any sort of tangible plot, just the basic
idea. It would make an interesting play or movie in
the right hands, maybe Zhang Jigang, David Lynch, and
Charlie Kaufman the guy who wrote Being John Malkovich.
Anyway, only someone trapped in samsaric illusory
material universe sentient looniness would even
conceive of such a goofy scenario, therefore, I bow
my head to thee, dearest Bodhisattva of Compassion,
Ultraterrestrial Prankster High Priestess, Mahatma,
etc... a true example of a contemporary Bodhisattva
of Egyptological Initiatory Contactee Experience who
never fails to make one's heart smile.

Novikov self-consistency principle

The Novikov self-consistency principle,
also known as the Novikov self-consistency
conjecture, is a principle developed by
Russian physicist Igor Dmitriyevich Novikov
in the mid-1980s to solve the problem of
paradoxes in time travel, which is
theoretically permitted in certain solutions
of general relativity (solutions containing
what are known as closed timelike curves).
Stated simply, the Novikov consistency
principle asserts that if an event exists
that would give rise to a paradox, or to
any "change" to the past whatsoever, then
the probability of that event is zero.
In short, it says that it's impossible
to create time paradoxes.

History of the principle
Physicists have long been aware that there
are solutions to the theory of general
relativity which contain closed timelike
curves, or CTCs--see for example the
Godel metric. Novikov discussed the
possibility of CTCs in books written in
1975 and 1983, offering the opinion that
only self-consistent trips back in time
would be permitted. In a 1990 paper by
Novikov and several others, Cauchy problem
in spacetimes with closed timelike curves,
the authors state:

 The only type of causality violation that
 the authors would find unacceptable is
 that embodied in the science-fiction
 concept of going backward in time and
 killing one's younger self ("changing the
 past"). Some years ago one of us
 (Novikov10) briefly considered the
 possibility that CTCs might exist and
 argued that they cannot entail this type
 of causality violation: Events on a CTC
 are already guaranteed to be self-consistent,
 Novikov argued; they influence each other
 around a closed curve in a self-adjusted,
 cyclical, self-consistent way. The other
 authors recently have arrived at the
 same viewpoint.

 We shall embody this viewpoint in a principle
 of self-consistency, which states that the only
 solutions to the laws of physics that can occur
 locally in the real Universe are those which
 are globally self-consistent. This principle
 allows one to build a local solution to the
 equations of physics only if that local solution
 can be extended to a part of a (not necessarily
 unique) global solution, which is well defined
 throughout the nonsingular regions of
 the spacetime.

Among the coauthors of this 1990 paper were Kip Thorne,
Mike Morris, and Ulvi Yurtsever, who in 1988 had
stirred up renewed interest in the subject of time
travel in general relativity with their paper Wormholes,
Time Machines, and the Weak Energy Condition, which
showed that a new general relativity solution known
as a traversable wormhole could lead to closed timelike
curves, and unlike previous CTC-containing solutions
it did not require unrealistic conditions for the
universe as a whole. After discussions with another
coauthor of the 1990 paper, John Friedman, they
convinced themselves that time travel need not lead
to unresolvable paradoxes, regardless of what type
of object was sent through the wormhole.

In response, another physicist named Joseph Polchinski
sent them a letter in which he argued that one could
avoid questions of free will by considering a
potentially paradoxical situation involving a billiard
ball sent through a wormhole which sends it back in
time. In this scenario, the ball is fired into a
wormhole at an angle such that, if it continues along
that path, it will exit the wormhole in the past at
just the right angle to collide with its earlier self,
thereby knocking it off course and preventing it from
entering the wormhole in the first place.
Thorne deemed this problem "Polchinski's paradox".

After considering the problem, two students at
Caltech (where Thorne taught), Fernando Echeverria
and Gunnar Klinkhammer, were able to find a solution
beginning with the original billiard ball trajectory
proposed by Polchinski which managed to avoid any
inconsistencies. In this situation, the billiard ball
emerges from the future at a different angle than
the one used to generate the paradox, and delivers
its younger self a glancing blow instead of knocking
it completely away from the wormhole, a blow which
changes its trajectory in just the right way so that
it will travel back in time with the angle required
to deliver its younger self this glancing blow.
Echeverria and Klinkhammer actually found that
there was more than one self-consistent solution,
with slightly different angles for the glancing
blow in each case. Later analysis by Thorne and
Robert Forward showed that for certain initial
trajectories of the billiard ball, there could
actually be an infinite number of self-consistent
solutions.

Echeverria, Klinkhammer and Thorne published a
paper discussing these results in 1991; in
addition, they reported that they had tried to
see if they could find any initial conditions
for the billiard ball for which there were no
self-consistent extensions, but were unable to
do so. Thus it is plausible that there exist
self-consistent extensions for every possible
initial trajectory, although this has not been
proven. This only applies to initial conditions
which are outside of the chronology-violating
region of spacetime, which is bounded by a
Cauchy horizon. This could mean that the Novikov
self-consistency principle does not actually
place any constraints on systems outside of the
region of spacetime where time travel is

IV. CAUSALITY

 

The past influences the future but the future does not influence the past; that is the essence of causality.

 

A fixed spacetime geometry whose causal structure defines "future" and "past" is needed just to ask whether or not a theory is consistent with causality.

 

A fixed background spacetime has been assumed for the field theories that are the concern of this paper, but the future and past cannot be unambiguously distinguished for points inside nonchronal regions connected by closed timelike curves.

 

However, we can ask whether the probabilities of a set of alternatives defined entirely outside such regions are independent of the geometry of spacetime to their future.

 

It is straightforward to see that the generalized quantum mechanics of matter fields described in the previous section is not causal in this sense if the evolution through nonchronal regions is not unitary.

 

Suppose that spacetime contains a single nonchronal region that is to our future and we are concerned with

the probabilities of a chain of alternatives C all occurring before the nonchronal region. If these alternatives decohere, then their probabilities p(a) are given, according to (3.1) and (3.12), by

Were X unitary, … there is no dependence on the geometry of spacetime to the future of the surface … whether or not it contains nonchronal regions. In this sense, unitary evolution leads to causality.

 

If X is not unitary, then the probabilities defined by (4.1) depend on the future geometry of spacetime.

 

Experiments could, in principle, detect the existence of nonchronal regions in our future by testing whether

present data is better fit by (4.2) or (4.1) with the appropriate.

 

We shall return to some simple considerations of such experiments in Sec. V.

 

Another way of seeing that information about the future is required to calculate present probabilities is …  Equation (4.3) is the formula for the probabilities of a generalized quantum mechanics with both an initial condition … and a final condition …. both the future and the past is required to make predictions in the present. In the example under discussion, that information concerns the failure of unitarity in the future arising from nonchronal regions of spacetime.

Unitarity and causality in generalized quantum mechanics for nonchronal spacetimes

Spacetime must be foliable by spacelike surfaces for the quantum mechanics of matter fields to be formulated in terms of a unitarily evolving state vector defined on spacelike surfaces. When a spacetime possesses nonchronal regions which cannot be foliated by spacelike surfaces, as in the case of spacetimes with closed timelike curves, a more general formulation of quantum mechanics is required. In such generalizations the transition matrix between alternatives on two spacelike surfaces lying in regions of spacetime where foliating families can be defined may be nonunitary if a nonchronal region lies between them. This paper describes a sum-over-histories generalized quantum mechanics whose probabilities consistently obey the rules of probability theory even in the presence of such nonunitarity. The usual notion of state on a spacelike surface is lost in this generalization. Anomalies such as nonconservation of energy or "Everett phones" that are exhibited by some generalizations of quantum mechanics are not found in this one. However, the generalization is acausal in the sense that the existence of nonchronal regions of spacetime in the future can affect the probabilities of alternatives today and signaling outside the light cone is possible. The detectability of nonunitary evolution and violations of causality in measurement situations are briefly considered.

This is all part and parcel with entanglement signal nonlocality with orthodox quantum theory as a limiting case of a more general post-quantum theory.

An open question in the field of relativistic quantum information is how parties in arbitrary motion may distribute and store quantum entanglement. We propose a scheme for storing quantum information in the field modes of cavities moving in flat space-time and analyze it in a quantum field theoretical framework. In contrast with previous work that found entanglement degradation between observers moving with uniform acceleration, we find the quantum information in such systems is protected. We further discuss a method for establishing the entanglement in the first place and show that in principle it is always possible to produce maximally entangled states between the cavities.  ...

A key step is to find suitable ways to distribute and store quantum entanglement in relativistic scenarios. Entanglement is an essential resource for most quantum information protocols ...

Here we reconsider the idea of using moving cavities in space-time to store quantum information including the boundary conditions necessary to describe the field inside the cavities. When such boundary conditions are taken into account, it becomes clear that the cavity walls protect the entanglement once it has been created. Furthermore, we show that entangling an inertial and a noninertial cavity is nontrivial but that it can always be achieved in principle. Thus we demonstrate that there is no theoretical upper bound to the quality of the entanglement that can be shared between an inertial and uniformly accelerated observer.

the superposition principle and the tensor product structure

Understanding entanglement in a relativistic setting is
important both for providing a more complete framework
for theoretical considerations, and for practical situations
such as the implementation of quantum computational
tasks performed by observers in arbitrary relative motion.
For observers in uniform relative motion the total
amount of entanglement is the same in all inertial
frames [6], although different inertial observers may see
these correlations distributed differently amongst various
degrees of freedom."

How does this affect geodesic deviation curvature measurements?


"However for observers in relative
uniform acceleration a communication horizon appears,
limiting access to information about the whole of
spacetime, resulting in a degradation of entanglement as
demonstrated for scalars [7, 8] and fermions [9], and restricting
the fidelity of processes such as teleportation
[10], and other communication protocols [11].

The most general situation is that of observers in different
states of non-uniform motion. This situation is
relevant even for inertial observers in curved spacetime,
who will undergo relative non-uniform acceleration due
to the geodesic deviation equation, and therefore disagree
on the degree of entanglement in a given bipartite quantum
state. While it is expected such entanglement will
be time-dependent, there is presently no approach for determining
how the entanglement changes throughout the
course of the motion.

We address this issue by constructing a new method
for determining such time-dependent entanglement measures.
By considering the description of the field modes
on a given spacelike hypersurface we are able to compute
the Bogoliubov transformations between states of instantaneous
positive and negative frequency as determined
by observers in different states of non-uniform motion.
We illustrate our approach by considering specifically the
entanglement between two modes of a non-interacting
scalar field when one of the observers describing the state
begins in a state of inertial motion and ends in a state
of uniform acceleration. From the perspective of the inertial
observer (Alice) the state is a maximally entangled
pure state. However the non-uniformly accelerated
(NUA) observer (Vic) finds that the entanglement degrades
as a function of time, approaching at late times
the constant value measured by an observer (Rob) undergoing
the same asymptotic uniform acceleration. The
paper is structured as follows: In Sec II we solve the Klein
Gordon equation in the NUA coordinates and compute
the Bogoliubov coefficients. In Sec. III, we quantify the
degree of entanglement with the help of the logarithmic
negativity N and mutual information I. Finally, we summarize
our results in the conclusions. ...

A given mode seen by an inertial observer
corresponds for the Uniformly Accelerated observer to a two-mode
squeezed state, associated with the field observed in the
two distinct Rindler regions.

The UA observer can
neither access nor influence field modes in the causally
disconnected region and so information is lost about the
quantum state, resulting in detection of a thermal state,
a phenomenon known as the Unruh effect [13]. ...

Our method for tracking the time-dependence of measures
of quantum information via a sequence of measurements
on hypersurfaces where positive/negative frequencies
can be defined is quite general and can be applied to
different kinds of motions and fields beyond the example
we consider here. For a situation in which both observers
begin freely falling into a black hole with one observer
increasing acceleration to avoid this fate, the distillable
entanglement degrades to a finite value. The entanglement
degradation is due to the increase of entanglement
with the modes in the region causally undetectable by
the NUA observer. In curved spacetime, we expect in
general that entanglement is a time-dependent as well as
an observer-dependent concept."

"The ground state of a quantum field is an extremely structured state. This is true even if the field is non inter- acting. A first indication that this is the case is that the propagator between two spatially separated points never vanishes, no matter how far apart the points are. That is correlations in vacuum extend over an infinite range. More subtle is that these correlations are such that in vacuum two spatially separated regions are entangled. This was first exhibited in [1] by decomposing Minkowski space into two Rindler wedges, and quantizing the field in each wedge. It is also very closely related to phenomena like black hole evaporation or particle creation induced by cosmological expansion [2,3]. It was later shown that the ground state exhibits quantum non locality: it is in principle possible to violate Bell inequalities in the vacuum, both for free fields [4–6] and for interacting fields [7], and this property applies to almost any quantum state [8,9]. Recently B. Reznik considered a specific model in which two localized detectors are coupled to the vacuum in space like separated regions and showed that the detectors can get entangled [10]. In [11] it was shown that the correlations between the detectors could be used to violate a Bell inequality. These studies were later extended to the case of more than two localized detectors [12].



In the present work we pursue the study of how uniformly accelerated detectors in opposite Rindler wedges get entangled. Contrary to previous work [10] we shall study the case where the detectors are in equilibrium with the Unruh heat bath. Although both detectors have thermalized, we shall show that they get entangled for certain choices of parameters and for certain relative positions."

ground state (vacuum) of the system is an entangled state
of the different motional modes of the chain and manifests
entanglement between single ions or distant groups of ions.
In order to detect vacuum entanglement, we consider processes
wherein the external motional degrees of freedom
are mapped to the internal ions states, which are then used
for entanglement detection. The internal levels are well
isolated, they can be temporarily coupled ‘‘on demand’’ to
the phonon modes by sending finite duration laser pulses,
and finally can be measured with nearly perfect precision.
In analogy with the field-theoretical case, the interaction
must be limited to a duration shorter than the time it takes
for perturbations to propagate between the two (probe) ions
along the chain.We comment that in the case of ion chains,
this process is interesting on its own, because one can
entangle the internal levels of two ions without actually
doing gates [7]. The most spectacular manifestation of the
idea would involve a chain with many ions. However, a
proof of principle can be attained with just two trapped
ions and is feasible using current technology.

This scheme then breaks the security of

the B92 quantum key distribution protocol [8]. Even with
no loss on the quantum channel, a CTC-assisted adversary
can learn the identity of every signal that Alice transmits
and then prepare and transmit the same state to Bob. The
adversary gains full information without producing any
disturbance. ...

We show that qubits traveling along closed timelike curves are a resource that a party can exploit to distinguish perfectly any set of quantum states. As a result, an adversary with access to closed timelike curves can break any prepare-and-measure quantum key distribution protocol. Our result also implies that a party with access to closed timelike curves can violate the Holevo bound.
Introduction.—The theory of general relativity points to
the possible existence of closed timelike curves (CTCs)
[1,2]. The grandfather paradox is one criticism raised to
their existence, but Deutsch resolved this paradox by presenting
a method for finding self-consistent solutions of
CTC interactions [3].
Recently, several quantum information researchers have
assumed that CTCs exist and have examined the consequences
of this assumption for computation [4–6]. Brun
showed that a classical treatment (assuming a lack of
contradictions) allows NP-hard problems to be computed
with a polynomial number of gates [4]. Bacon followed
with a purely quantum treatment that demonstrates the
same reduction of NP-hard problems to P, along with a
sketch of how to perform this reduction in a fault-tolerant
manner [5]. Aaronson and Watrous have recently established
that either classical or quantum computers interacting
with closed timelike curves can compute any function
in PSPACE in polynomial time [6].
In this Letter, we show how a party with access to CTCs,
or a ‘‘CTC-assisted’’ party, can perfectly distinguish nonorthogonal
quantum states. The result has implications for
fundamental protocols in quantum communication because
a simple corollary is that a CTC-assisted party can break
any prepare-and-measure quantum key distribution protocol
[7–9]. (The security of such a scheme relies on the
information-disturbance trade-off for identifying quantum
states.) Furthermore, the capacity for quantum systems to
carry classical information becomes unbounded.
Our work here raises fundamental questions concerning
the nature of a physical world in which closed timelike
curves exist because it challenges the postulate of quantum
mechanics that nonorthogonal states cannot be perfectly
distinguished. A full theory of quantum gravity would have
to resolve this apparent contradiction between the implication
of CTCs and the laws of quantum mechanics. Note
that any alternative source of nonlinearity would raise
similar questions. ...
Conclusion.—We have shown how to exploit closed
timelike curves to distinguish nonorthogonal states. Two
direct implications are that one could break any prepare and-
measure quantum key distribution protocol as well as
violate the Holevo bound. If CTC qubits are treated as a
free resource, then the achievable classical communication
rate with a single noiseless quantum transmission is unbounded.
We conjecture that the addition of any nonlinearity
to quantum mechanics, such as that considered in
Ref. [11], could be exploited similarly.
There are at least three ways to consider the implications
of the results in this Letter. First, note that even if our
Universe contains no stable wormholes, the existence of
microscopic, short-lived closed timelike curves can still
revolutionize information processing tasks if they persist
long enough to engineer specific unitary interactions with
qubits traveling their worldlines. Second, while issues such
as the grandfather paradox are resolved by Deutsch’s formalism
for stochastic and quantum bits traveling along
closed timelike curves [3], the eroding of a finite capacity
for classical communication with a qubit is a strong
information theoretic argument casting doubt on the allowed
existence of CTCs (similar in vein to the quantum communication
complexity argument in Ref. [12]). A third tack is
to consider whether Deutsch’s fixed point solution for
resolving CTC paradoxes is itself somehow flawed. If the
formalism is invalidated, then computational complexity
results such as PCTC 1/4 PSPACE [6] should be reexamined.
Any theory of quantum gravity will need to reconcile this
intersection of quantum information theory and general
relativity.
Finally, it should be interesting to study the effect of
noise on the physical processes outlined in this Letter. For
instance, how stable are these maps to perturbations in the
input states? Recent work utilizing the Heisenberg picture
may be a useful approach [13]. We conjecture that a
CTC-assisted party can construct a universal cloner with
fidelity approaching one, at the cost of increasing the
available dimensions in ancillary and CTC resources.
One area of future work could be to optimize this fidelity
given CTC resources of fixed dimension.

JS: Of course it may not work, but if it doesn't nothing else will. I don't think the Machian idea will work either because the whole scheme using phi is very shaky ground - at best a primitive approximation to Einstein's GR. To me it makes no sense whatsoever to try to change the mass of material objects - indeed it would be dangerous if you could.

Experimental investigation is problematic for several reasons.  First, making superconducting BECs is not a trivial matter and requires special resources.  

JS: Agreed. However, my new idea from yesterday may leapfrog over that. A pure reactance in the metamaterial if it would allow no ohmic Joule heat loss in the very near field of the LC circuit may allow us to have a "superconductivity without superconductivity" - this new idea needs further investigation.

They are, however, already being investigated at Harvard.  There are no reports from Harvard that suggest that the BECs they make produce the sort of spatiotemporal distortions that Jack's proposal suggests they should.

1) the effects are very short lived.

2) no measurement detectors of the required type are deployed. If you do not seek you will not find.

3) no device using reactance near fields has yet been constructed to my knowledge.

4) remember I am talking about ELF LC circuits with capacitor fillings made of the right kind of meta-materials yet to be designed.

I think I can safely say that no experiments conceived of to date are relevant to what I am talking about. The atomic gas BECs do not have the quasi static EM near fields I am talking about in them.


But that may just be a result of no one looking for the sort of effects in question.  The way to look would seem to be to watch light propagation in the vicinity of the BECs, not in the BECs themsleves.  

NO!  Again Jim does not get that I am not talking about real photons in propagating light beams. I am talking about maybe 60 Hz near induction fields in a specially made capacitor in an LC circuit. I don't expect light propagation would show any significant effect.

The basic source term I am talking about is

This is just straight-forward interferometry.  You can do this, believe it or not, using garden variety laser pointers, though you'd probably want something a little fancier, if only to suppress the giggle factor.  In the BECS, if Jack is right, spacetime is radically different from outside.  The transition can reasonably be expected to extend beyond the BECs themselves.  So that's what you would look for.

JS: Yes, you might be able to detect a very weak TRANSIENT HFGW gravity distortion field that way at 10^15 Hz far field, that would never be strong enough for any propulsion - in my intuitive opinion.

In the metamaterial area, likewise there are problems.  Metamaterials were first successfully made for RF fields using small pieces of wire and metal.  They have recently been extended into the optical regime using smaller and smaller structures.  Jack's problem is the opposite as he wants ELF to DC metamaterials.  By a simple scaling argument, the size of the engineered structures should be very large.  VERY large.  

JS: No, Jim is completely wrong here because he keeps thinking REAL PHOTONS where f = ck. He does not get that f =/= ck for inductive near fields e.g. the static Coulomb field has f = 0 with a whole spectrum of k',s i.e. spatial Fourier transform of 1/r. Therefore, we can have f ---> 0 with k ---> inifinity in the inductive near field. It is not true at all that low frequency near fields require large wavelengths - that is only true for the transverse polarized far radiation fields!

This suggests that another approach to ELF metamaterials needs to be found.  Presumably, though, it should be possible to make such material, if they can be made at all, with fairly common and cheap materials.  We're not talking element 115 here.  Fabrication problems perhaps.  But not prohibitively expensive materials.

Let's say Jack, or one of his friends, hits upon a way to make an ELF or DC metamaterial capacitor.  It there a simple way to test it?  Yes, but it isn't by weighing it, for while in the on state it will be repelled by the Earth, it will move in the opposite direction (in accordance with the EEP).  The way to test it is on a thrust balance of the sort I've been working with for years.  You simply make the capacitor part of a system with another mass a small distance from it.  Turn it on, and the pair of masses should self-accelerate.  Easily measured with a thrust balance.  No elaborate, deeply expensive, hard to obtain equipment needed.  It would be trivial for me to do with the system on hand.

So, the simplest test of Jack's ideas is for him to design an ELF to DC metamaterial capacitor that I can then put on the thrust balance.  The other thing to do is see if the Harvard folks can be convinced to look for local spacetime distortions in the vicinity of the BECs in their system.  That means rigging an interferometer so that one of the paths passes close the a BEC.  Neither of these tests should be prohibitively expensive or difficult to do.  The hard part is designing the metamaterial capacitor.  This is Jack's proposal.  That's his job.
