There are now several papers claiming  if not to derive general relativity from the holographic principle at least a deep connection or "compatibility" between them. This is still at the  cutting edge of course like M Theory. The basic idea/conjecture would be that our future event horizon has a 2D + 1 anyonic quantum field theory with fractional quantum statistics that retro-causally holographically images 3D +1 classical general relativity in its interior "bulk". The standard explanation of Newton's bucket in terms of Einstein's general relativity would then apply.

Our 2D + 1 future event horizon hologram screen cosmic computer replaces the naive notion "distant stars" since all the mass of the observable universe is a hologram image of that horizon.

What matters, in the spirit of Wheeler-Feynman, is the area/entropy of our future horizon at its intersection with our future light cone - in this speculative picture.

Note that the virtual fermion-antifermion pairs making up dark matter clump under their self-attraction forming islands of /\ < 0 AdS metric e.g. galactic halos, whilst the virtual bosons spread out under their self-repulsion forming the /\ > 0 dS dark energy at large scales.

The distant stars are less then 1% of all the gravitating stuff of the world.

The new version of Mach's Principle is the Holographic Principle, however the "hologram screen" is our future dark energy horizon that accelerates the expansion speed of 3D space by ~ c^2/(de Sitter area)^1/2 ~ 1 nanometer/sec^2
Our future event horizon is a computer and it is in effect the Wheeler-Feynman total absorber as explained in Rev Mod Phys 1995 Hoyle-Narlikar.
Our future horizon area is asymptotically constant, it does not increase with time. There is an error in the Wickedpedia article.

No that's complete nonsense.
It violates the equivalence principle!
Inertial mass = gravitational mass
mass drops out of the equations!
timelike geodesics are independent of the mass of the ship
This is elementary physics!

Are you suggesting the sudden appearance of a constant gravitational acceleration is a

You are now entering the realm where no one can prove you riight or wrong because there
is no other way to determine how the spacecraft inertial mass has changed.
