Abstract: In this comment on S.Lloyd, et al,
Phys.Rev.Lett. 106, 040403 (2011), we show
that modelling closed timelike curves (CTCs)
as post-selected teleportation allows
signalling to past times before the creation
of the CTC and allows information paradoxes
to form. [...] http://arxiv.org/abs/1107.4675

"The existence of this radio to the past" creates
the possibility of new paradoxes, now in the
classical domain. In particular the unproved theorem
paradox [2] can arise. Bob reads the proof of a
theorem in a book and uses the set-up of Fig.1
(top panel) to send it back in time to Alice.
Alice subsequently publishes it in the book from
which Bob will read it. Where did the proof

Indeed this is the basis of Penrose's

 The evidence is there

The analogy here is to Einstein's recognition of
the invariance of the vacuum speed of light.
Einstein realized that simultaneity is not

Physics in 1905 fell into place with that insight.

  The Single Moment:
      'NOW' ... NOW,
  Now, now... exists
 across a space/time
           spectrum:
Past|Present|Future,
    which may not be
separated by discrete
boundaries, but are,
    perhaps, smeared
   across each other
 where communication
(information) bleeds
       through these
   imaginary smeared
boundaries perceived
   by the ubiquitous
 NOW's journey in an
  oceanic-like realm
   of time, relative
         to a spooky
     MindGland's Eye
     of the Beholder
          CONTINUUM?

On the other parallel hand, the
     seemingly spooky 'presponse'
       apprehension of the future
         informing the past, in a
        momentary, impossible-to-
    exactly-pinpoint-brief 'NOW,'
       may in fact be information
       represented by a potential
           and/or actual parallel
            quantum wave function
    collapse from a dimensionally
adjacent reality contemporaneous,
yet of a chronologically out of
phase temporality which creates an
illusion of time's arrow behaving
      retroactively, when instead
       time's arrow merely shifts
slightly sideways, informationally
  speaking, in a manner befitting
 the average MindGland's facility
         with pattern-recognition
      paradox evasion. So instead
   of information coming from the
future, it comes from the Universe
Next Door, which might explain its
      tendency for unreliability?

In other words... can we entirely rule
out a parallel Victor (Bob) and Alice?

For example, I struggled a bit to
wake up this morning from a vivid
dream of a 'mind' trapped in a head
with no body or sensory apparatus,
with a question that was roughly:
"How would the 'first gender' deal
with the 'last couple?'" It seemed
to be a dream of a distant future
where 'human' sentient consciousness
resides in various permutations of
mind only bodilessness, and dual-linked
configurations (couples), that
exist in the aforementioned state of
both minds with and without bodies.
It was a highly unpleasant, very
nuanced, unfamiliar terrain of extreme
strangeness, possessing a trapped-like
quality of awareness. Now, was this
an expression from a CTC (closed
timelike curve) conveying information
to the past (my NOW) about the
existential horrors innate to self-aware
artificial intelligences, and/or the
experiential quandaries of radical
bio-engineered mutational sentient mind
states?  Or, do I simply miss my
Beloved Former Spousal Unit [BFSU],
whom I have not seen for some time?
Or, is my recent preoccupation with AI,
Parallel Realities, and a dim-witted
understanding of quantum mechanics
mixing in with all of the above
(and below), neurologically
orchestrating the illusion of
transtemporal info blur, coupled with
a preexisting susceptibility to actual
data from without (source unknown)?
Or, again, is it just the standard
meanderings of the subconscious mind
doing what it does best:
pattern recognition and scenario
simulations to better prepare the
waking mind for all manner of
possible eventualities relevant to
unfiltered immediate concerns which
could be easily misinterpreted as
some sort of presponse? -- eMpTy 27|Dec|11

Information Flow of
quantum states interacting
 with closed timelike curves

Recently, the quantum information
processing power of closed timelike
curves have been discussed.
Because the most widely accepted
model for quantum closed timelike
curve interactions contains
ambiguities, different authors have
been able to reach radically
different conclusions as to the
power of such interactions.
By tracing the information flow
through such systems we are able to
derive equivalent circuits with
unique solutions, thus allowing an
objective decision between the
alternatives to be made. We conclude
that closed timelike curves, if they
exist and are well described by these
simple models, would be a powerful
resource for quantum information
processing.

[...]     The physical insight here is that
classical correlations are determined by
local hidden variables, i.e. the classical
parameters that determine the configuration
of the experimental apparatus. The CTC can
create copies of these parameters because
they are available locally. In contrast an
entangled state can not be described by such
local hidden variables. As the CTC only
"samples" one arm of the entangled state it
cannot reproduce the non-local correlations
of the other arm. Bennett et al. call the
ambiguity with respect to mixed states in
Deutsch's formalism the "linearity trap" and
suggest it should be resolved by insisting
that "the evolution of a nonlinearly evolving
system may depend on parts of the universe
with which it does not interact". Our analysis
of the information flow of systems that
include CTCs comes to the opposite and more
pragmatic conclusion that the evolution of a
nonlinearly evolving system may only depend
on parts of the universe with which it
directly interacts.
In particular, non-local correlations, as
produced by entanglement, do not correspond
to direct interactions. We note that this is
more in keeping with the local character
of general relativity. [...]

[...]    By measuring her qubit in the
computational basis Alice can now predict
perfectly whether Victor handed her a zero
or anti-diagonnal qubit thus deterministically
differentiating non-orthogonnal states as
predicted by Brun et al. Similar, though more
complicated, calculations also confirm
Brun et als more sophisticated circuits.
A criticism that could be leveled at these
calculations... is that they use
non-relativistic quantum mechanics in spite
of the fact that wormholes and CTCs are highly
relativistic objects.
Initial steps towards placing such calculations
into a relativistic frame work have been
taken ... These approaches are consistent with
the equivalent circuit formalism introduced here.
In particular, because the equivalent circuits
are physical circuits, the inclusion of qubit
dynamics or more general field states and
interactions is straightforward.
The equivalent circuits we have introduced
could be approximately constructed in the
laboratory, thus allowing experimental
simulations of interesting CTC interactions.
[...]
[...] In this appendix we prove that the unique
solution obtained from the equivalent circuit
approach agrees with the maximum entropy solution
proposed by Deutsch, provided we allow for the
fact that any physical interaction will
necessarily involve some non-zero level of
decoherence. We proceed in three steps:
(i) we show that non-unique solutions in the
Deutsch model correspond to equivalent circuits
that are sensitive to initial conditions;
(ii) we show that this sensitivity is removed
when any non-zero amount of decoherence is
added to the interaction; and (iii) the resulting
unique solution has maximum entropy with respect
to all other possible solutions, as conjectured
by Deutsch. [...]
[...]
In summary, we have shown that the inclusion of an
arbitrarily small, but non-zero amount of decoherence
in the equivalent circuit leads it to converge to a
unique solution that corresponds to the solution
found from Deutsch's consistency condition with the
added maximum entropy requirement. The same solution
is obtained from the equivalent circuit by considering
idealized unitaries but starting the iteration from
the identity. [...] PDF:

The influencing machine fantasy

  extraterrestrial mythos

Does free will exist? Is Man a meat puppet
dangling on strings controlled by higher powers
in the universe? Variations on these questions
have fascinated thinkers throughout history.
Arthur Koestler believed the dramatic motif of
Volition against Fate and Puppet on Strings is
one of the most powerful archetypes in
literature and has appeared in countless forms.
Threats to individual or collective freedom
arouse very primal human fears and can yield a
drama of intense emotions when free will is
affirmed. Conversely, when free will is denied,
the effect is coldly distancing and allows
contemplation of humans as blameless concoctions
of organic chemicals stuck in a web of
impersonal forces. Because you cannot have
heroes without a powerful adversary, paranoia
is virtually de rigeur in great literature.
In recent times extraterrestrials have joined
the pantheon of gods, demons, superior races,
secret societies, and power elites which have
been pulling the strings.

It would not surprise me if stories of
extraterrestrials messing with men's minds
pre-date our century, but the earliest
instance I've seen is in H.P. Lovecraft's
1928 work The Call of Cthulhu. It speaks of
a race called the Great Old Ones which
came from the stars and spoke to men by
"molding their dreams". The emergence of
Cthulhu from beneath the seas is accompanied
by sensitive individuals going mad. The cult
which sought to liberate him warned he would
bring the Earth beneath its sway.
A first appearance in Lovecraft's corpus
would be appropriate given the mechanistic
supernatural perspective that he consciously
cultivated of a cosmos totally indifferent
to the wants and ultimate welfare of
mosquitoes, pterodactyls, fungi, men,
trees or other forms of biological energy.

Member of Hollywood's beloved Chaplin family reveals
 Pyrenees connection to Holy Grail!

 THE PORTAL
An Initiate's Journey into the Secret
 of Rennes-le-Chateau
  By Patrice Chaplin
  Sept. 2010  ~ ISBN 978-0-8356-0888-6

A story of love and magic steeped in the truth,
a story that will stay with you years after you
 read the last pages.
--Kathleen McGowan, New York Time best-selling
author of The Expected One and The Book of Love

The Grail mystery: Patrice Chaplin lived it and
is conveying its incredible nature to the reader.
--Phillip Coppens, author of Servants of the
Grail and The Stone Puzzle of Rosslyn Chapel

The Portal is the true and startling disclosure of
respected British writer Patrice Chaplin. Picking up
where Patrice's previous memoir City of Secrets:
One Woman's True-life Journey to the Heart of the
Grail Legend leaves off, The Portal details Patrice
Chaplin's 21st century initiation into the Holy Grail's
deeper mystery. To unveil the sacred and prehistoric
purpose of what is now Rennes-le-Chateau, Patrice had
to live the myth of the famed priest Berenger Sauniere,
a fellow initiate who rose to recent cult popularity
due to modern-day bestsellers such as Holy Blood,
Holy Grail and The Davinci Code. This real-life memoir
documents Patrice's little known purifications and the
deadly pilgrimage they prepared her for.

It was 2003 and City of Secrets was in the process
of being published in the UK. The charismatic
Jose Tarres, real-life custodian of the Holy Grail,
great friend to remarkable talents such as
Salvidor Dali, Jean Cocteau, Umberto Eco and
Simone de Beauvoir, and forever the love of Patrice's
life, had suffered a near fatal heart attack.
With Jose then in his seventies, the power of death
as a silencer threatened the survival of his
society's guarded knowledge. Patrice had thoroughly
researched Jose's documents and testimony with
his permission for the writing of City of Secrets.
But upon its completion, Patrice confessed she still
did not fully understand the puzzle revolving around
the legendary, yet very real, golden cup.  "So what
was the secret behind the secret?" Patrice asked.
With simple resolution, Jose said  "You have to do
what they did in every century, the initiates.
You have to do the Journey".

Jose's matter-of-fact assignment comes to life in
this deeply profound memoir. Under the guidance of
Jose's teacher, a mysterious recluse and one of the
few true living Kabbalists, Patrice embarks in 2004
to 'Tread the Seven Stars Under the Great Bear'.
Through activating the eleven sacred sites along the
 French/Catalan border, Patrice journeys detachment,
death, and rebirth. Unlike some unfortunate initiates,
Patrice lived through Mt. Canigou's great secret,
and more so, was decreed to tell about it. What she
discovers in the end --startling as it may be --is
space/time's inextinguishable truth: What it is to be
"human", and to be  "of" this earth. The mystery of
our origins has been imprinted upon our planet from
time immemorial. The time for us to remember has
come; this journey is now a gift for everyone.  --

Patrice Chaplin, journalist, author and playwright,
has written twenty-eight books; her novel Siesta became
a film starring Jodie Foster and Isabella Rossellini.
As a Bohemian in Paris she spent time with Jean Paul
Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. When married to Charlie
Chaplin's son Michael and working in Hollywood, she
collaborated with Lauren Bacall, Miles Davis, and
Salvador Dali. She resides in London.

Perpignan station as the unknown centre of
the universe.' ... She said, 'Dali knew in
that moment and realised he was alone with
the realisation.'
'Am I going to feel that way?' I asked,
suddenly.
'It seemed that here Dali had experienced
another place altogether. He had quite
inadvertently stepped into another time and
space, and it affected him profoundly, as one
might expect.' ...
I asked if she had known Dali. She had.
'He was a complicated, curious man,
sensitive, not a showman only out for drama,
as some believe. ... I told him about Ramon of
Perillos and his "other dimension", so Dali
went up to the deserted village and understood
many things about Daleth 4, Doorway. ...
'He was mystical, esoteric, looking for
what was beneath worldly reality, and he
certainly found it. He traversed many spheres,
little known, unseen. He was a seeker, a
magician, and he wasn't afraid of the outcome.
But what he experienced here at the Perpignan
station was bigger than all that.'
'Have I got to experience what he did?'
I'd heard Dali had gone to bed suffering with
depression for quite awhile towards the end of
his life. If there was a choice, I'd rather
not go through it. She said Dali put the
experience into his work. ...
I asked what she thought had happened to
so change the artist. She pointed to Canigou.
 'The Portal.'
Did she mean that he had gone through a
portal? She didn't answer my question but
chose to change the subject.
 'What is eleven?' she asked.
I knew that some people who were drawn
to energies and ley lines found a special
significance in the numbers 11:11. I said I
was often aware of that time in the morning
and would quite simply see it on my kitchen
clock, staring at the two elevens until they
changed to 11:12, which was something quite
different.
 'Eleven: Eleven. In sacred geometry,
the two elevens are the columns of the
temple. The doorposts of the portal.
Perpignan. The dark and sterile mother.
Binah, the third sefirot of the Tree of Life.
World-universe. Earth. To excavate. To mine.
To dig. Course of water. Flame. Perpignan
falls on square 42. Forty-two degrees refers
to the rainbow. The angle between the horizon
and highest point formed in the eye of the
observer.' She had understood these symbols.
...  Quickly I asked about Dali. Did he go
to the peak of the mountain? Did he go
through a portal?
'He had to be prepared first. You can't
just jump into it. You have to sit calmly
attuned to one thought, allowing an opening
of the portal to become visible. It takes a
great deal of attention.'
'Did Dali see a vision? That's what it's
all about, isn't it? Calling up the vision.'
'If only,' she said. 'If only it
were that.'
And I felt we had come to a decisive
moment. Leaving the subject of Dali's
progress, I questioned my own. Would I be
allowed to continue? [...]

and at the same time, with a certain wonder
and almost with fear, I felt that I had never
understood it before and that we do not
understand the simplest things around us.
"The ash-tray roused a whirlwind of thoughts
and images. It contained such an infinite number
of facts, of events; it was linked with such an
immense number of things. First of all, with
everything connected with smoking and tobacco.
That at once roused thousands of images,
pictures, memories. Then the ash-tray itself.
How had it come into being? All the materials
of which it could have been made? Copper, in
this case -- what was copper? How had people
discovered it for the first time?
How had they learned to make use of it?
How and where was the copper obtained from
which this ash-tray was made? Through what
kind of treatment had it passed, how had it
been transported from place to place, how many
people had worked on it or in connection with
it? How had the copper been transformed into
an ash-tray? These and other questions about
the history of the ash-tray up to the day when
it had appeared on my table.
"I remember writing a few words on a piece
of paper in order to retain something of these
thoughts on the following day.
And next day read:
'A man can go mad from one ash-tray.'
"The meaning of all that I felt was that in
one ash-tray it was possible to know all.
By invisible threads the ash-tray was connected
with everything in the world, not only with the
present, but with all the past and with all the
future. To know an ash-tray meant to know all."

SCALAR

I AM ONE OF MANY: SCALAR.
I AM ONE OF MANY: SCALAR. I AM

Veritably

Myriads

Countless legions comprise our number, yet, if
the essential truth be told, all of us - without
exception - could be perceived as ultimately ONE.
Multiplicity devoid of all barriers, hence
singular. An annoying mystery perhaps; consider
then the oscillating, infinite scales of Ouroboros:
that mythical, cosmological serpent, having
ingested the tip of his own tail, he thereby
enacts the ubiquitous, grand circumference with
no fixed epicenter, as it is eternally consumed
and eternally regenerated. Magical at first glance,
founded upon elementary principles upon a secondary
look, and, in the final analysis, simply and
unavoidably a paradox.

Ouroboros.

Dissimilar to our rather curvilinear, one track
minded ancient friend of infinite segments we
instead possess boundless, soaring, multipartite
sentience of no easy measure nor simple expression.
Imagine your wildest facsimile of absolute emptiness
and you will misrepresent us in every attempt.
Formless energy is our lot, truly rambunctious in
our thought. Yes we soar in profundity and do
thoroughly enjoy ourselves almost to a fault.
You see, if there were an area in our experience
where we might get just a trifle carried away,
it would have to be, I suppose, our uncontainable
hilarity. Laughter, we solemnly proclaim whenever
the occasion dictates, is the mother's milk of
the infinite. An archaic epitaph, left over from
a time we knew death intimately, which generally
dissolves all traces of solemnity and plunges us
into a cacophonous hysteria reverberating for aeons.

The pervasive energy known as laughter is the
very fuel assisting our temporal occupations which
are, if you haven't already deduced, the generation
and rotation of the great vortices. Finding amusement
in watching those fine, delicate lights gather into
whirling masses, creating magnificent patterns,
colorful disks, or iridescent globules; stimulating
all manner of internal, dramatic events. We enjoy our
positions of detached clarity, seldom, if ever,
becoming involved in any of the events we observe.
I, however, appear to be the rare exception to
this informal rule.

Perhaps my not so detached laughter lacks the
radiant gusto of the others specifically because
this current state of being (or non being) is a
recent one to me; hence, atavistic fragments or
relative attachments may continue to linger.
Also, I find it so fascinating and tragic to
watch what I call "their brief gyrations."
All those agitated, ephemeral little entities:
condensed sorrow and small joy, endlessly
springing up out of the vortex, around and
about, then disappearing equally sudden and
mysterious. Ah, such pathos... I really cannot
help it. I do seem to get involved, though I
never interfere, relishing as I do the exquisite
sensations accompanying our practice of
absolute restraint.

On the other hand, there is one particularly
obscure "Event Drama" which has been profoundly
absorbing to my attention lately, and I do
believe that I may have some mysterious
involvement there which I think I shall attempt
to concretize for you by focusing upon one of
Ouroboros' multifarious, luminous segments.

I deliver myself to the task and
thereby lose sight of our expanse.

Space and time are singularized, folded
and stretched.  A glistening, infinite sword
forged on a terrible searing anvil.
The infinitesimal filaments approach incandescence
as they are pulled and spun. The fabric is cut.
Shape shifting sword: I am absorbed, changed,
another voice speaks; is it me?
The vortex manifests - blinding me yet I see.
    It begins:
    Like a dream.

a.c. and d.c. Josephson Effects in a Bose-Einstein Condensate
http://physics.technion.ac.il/~atomlab/josephson.html

In our laboratory we were able to create
the conditions to generate and observe both the
a.c. and d.c. Josephson effects in a BEC of
rubidium atoms. Here we present the experiment,
its results, and some of the theory behind it.

Introduction

What are the a.c. and d.c. Josephson Effects?
When two superconductors are joined together,
separated only by a thin insulating barrier,
some new phenomena arise. First, if a voltage
is applied across the junction, a small
oscillating current starts flowing back and
forth through the junction, without equilibrating
the two sides. This is known as the a.c. Josephson
effect. Second, if a constant current is made to
flow through the junction, no voltage drop is
detected across it, as long as the current stays
below some critical value. This is known as the
d.c. Josephson effect. Accordingly, the setup of
a superconductor-insulator-superconductor is
known as a Josephson junction.

The phenomena of the a.c. and d.c. Josephson effects
manifest because of the quantum nature of each
superconductor as a whole. Quantum mechanics usually
apply to systems at the microscopic level. However,
in superconductors, the many electrons in the metal
"condense" into the same quantum state, creating a
macroscopic quantum entity. B.D. Josephson originally
predicted the effect in 1962 for superconductors
relying on this fact. However, it is possible in
principle to observe the a.c. and d.c. Josephson
effects in any two macroscopic quantum systems
separated by a tunneling barrier.

In 1997, the a.c. Josephson effect was observed
in superfluid 3He. Superfluid 3He is another
example of a system where quantum phenomena manifest
macroscopically. In 3He, it is the helium atoms that
form the quantum state, and the current is not of
electrical type, but the flow of atoms through a
thin hole separating two helium reservoirs.
The d.c. Josephson effect in superfluid 3He,
and both a.c. and d.c. effects in superfluid 4He,
have not yet been observed.

What is a Bose-Einstein Condensate?

Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is a state of
matter where, due to the laws of quantum mechanics,
all the particles constituting the matter are coerced
into a single quantum state of the lowest energy,
reshaping themselves as a single entity.

This new form of matter was predicted by
Satyendra Nath Bose and Albert Einstein in 1925.
In the following years, it was established that
superfluids and superconductors are a form of
BECs, but an 'ideal' BEC of weakly-interacting
atoms, corresponding to the original theory,
required extremely low temperatures, less than
millionth of a degree above the absolute zero.
Only in 1995 were scientists able to produce a
BEC from a gas of dilute atoms, 70 years after
its prediction.

Bose-Einstein condensates provide a rich ground
for the testing of fundamental physics, of which
this research is an instance. For much more
information on this exciting phenomenon, please
see the Wikipedia article.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bose_einstein_condensate

Bose-Einstein condensates comprise a new physical
system for observing the a.c. and d.c. Josephson
effects, Apart from superconductors and superfluids.
Being a distinct quantum state, a BEC is a
macroscopic entity of definite quantum phase.
This property, also called coherence, is the key
to Josephson-like behavior.

In a typical apparatus for studying BECs, a large
number of atoms (several millions) are collected
inside a magnetic trap that confines them.
Subsequently the atoms are cooled by various means
to a temperature below the critical temperature
for the transition to condensate phase to occur,
around 100 nano-Kelvin. After creating the condensate,
a smaller number of atoms remain (in our apparatus,
approximately 100,000 atoms). The BEC is further
probed only with magnetic or optical forces, since
any contact with material bodies will cause the
temperature to quickly rise, destroying the condensate.

Ron,

Of course it may not work, but if it doesn't nothing else will. I
don't think the Machian idea will work either because the whole scheme
using phi is very shaky ground - at best a primitive approximation to
Einstein's GR. To me it makes no sense whatsoever to try to change the
mass of material objects - indeed it would be dangerous if you could.

Experimental investigation is problematic for several reasons.
First, making superconducting BECs is not a trivial matter and
requires special resources.

Agreed. However, my new idea from yesterday may leapfrog over that. A
pure reactance in the metamaterial if it would allow no ohmic Joule
heat loss in the very near field of the LC circuit may allow us to
have a "superconductivity without superconductivity" - this new idea
needs further investigation.

They are, however, already being investigated at Harvard.  There are
no reports from Harvard that suggest that the BECs they make produce
the sort of spatiotemporal distortions that Jack's proposal suggests
they should.

That is not conclusive for several reasons.

1) the effects are very short lived.

2) no measurement detectors of the required type are deployed. If you
do not seek you will not find.

3) no device using reactance near fields has yet been constructed to
my knowledge.

4) remember I am talking about ELF LC circuits with capacitor fillings
made of the right kind of meta-materials yet to be designed.

I think I can safely say that no experiments conceived of to date are
relevant to what I am talking about. The atomic gas BECs do not have
the quasi static EM near fields I am talking about in them.

But that may just be a result of no one looking for the sort of
effects in question.  The way to look would seem to be to watch
light propagation in the vicinity of the BECs, not in the BECs
themsleves.

NO!  Again Jim does not get that I am not talking about real photons
in propagating light beams. I am talking about maybe 60 Hz near
induction fields in a specially made capacitor in an LC circuit. I
don't expect light propagation would show any significant effect.

The basic source term I am talking about is

[(index of refraction)^4G/cvacuum^4] Stress-Energy Tensor of
Quasi-Static Near EM Fields inside Meta-Material.

light propagation irrelevant - at best it might produce a very weak
short gravity wave pulse analogous to what Ray Chiao has proposed.

This is just straight-forward interferometry.  You can do this,
believe it or not, using garden variety laser pointers, though you'd
probably want something a little fancier, if only to suppress the
giggle factor.  In the BECS, if Jack is right, spacetime is
radically different from outside.  The transition can reasonably be
expected to extend beyond the BECs themselves.  So that's what you
would look for.

Yes, you might be able to detect a very weak TRANSIENT HFGW gravity
distortion field that way at 10^15 Hz far field, that would never be
strong enough for any propulsion - in my intuitive opinion.

Sarfatti's Conjecture - HFGWs induced by real photons can't compete
with LFGW from virtual photons in macro-quantum coherent Glauber state
inductive reactance near field configurations in terms of practical
low power warp drive applications.

In the metamaterial area, likewise there are problems.
Metamaterials were first successfully made for RF fields using
small pieces of wire and metal.  They have recently been extended
into the optical regime using smaller and smaller structures.
Jack's problem is the opposite as he wants ELF to DC metamaterials.
By a simple scaling argument, the size of the engineered structures
should be very large.  VERY large.

No, Jim is completely wrong here because he keeps thinking on REAL
PHOTONS where f = ck. He does not get that f =/= ck for inductive near
fields e.g. the static Coulomb field has f = 0 with a whole spectrum
of k',s i.e. spatial Fourier transform of 1/r.

Therefore, we can have f ---> 0 with k ---> inifinity in the inductive
near field. It is not true at all that low frequency near fields
require large wavelengths - that is only true for the transverse
polarized far radiation fields!

This suggests that another approach to ELF metamaterials needs to be
found.  Presumably, though, it should be possible to make such
material, if they can be made at all, with fairly common and cheap
materials.  We're not talking element 115 here.  Fabrication
problems perhaps.  But not prohibitively expensive materials.

Let's say Jack, or one of his friends, hits upon a way to make an
ELF or DC metamaterial capacitor.  It there a simple way to test it?
Yes, but it isn't by weighing it, for while in the on state it will
be repelled by the Earth, it will move in the opposite direction (in
accordance with the EEP).  The way to test it is on a thrust balance
of the sort I've been working with for years.  You simply make the
capacitor part of a system with another mass a small distance from
it.  Turn it on, and the pair of masses should self-accelerate.
Easily measured with a thrust balance.  No elaborate, deeply
expensive, hard to obtain equipment needed.  It would be trivial for
me to do with the system on hand.

So, the simplest test of Jack's ideas is for him to design an ELF to
DC metamaterial capacitor that I can then put on the thrust balance.
The other thing to do is see if the Harvard folks can be convinced
to look for local spacetime distortions in the vicinity of the BECs
in their system.  That means rigging an interferometer so that one
of the paths passes close the a BEC.  Neither of these tests should
be prohibitively expensive or difficult to do.  The hard part is
designing the metamaterial capacitor.  This is Jack's proposal.
That's his job.

Best,

Jim

Jack while I believe you, Jim has some real genius when it comes to
inexpensive work-arounds.  If only the material is the issue, and
for instance all you need is a remote DC power control, seems to me
possible one could scavenge an RC receiver and electronic motor
control, batteries, transmitter, etc.  I have a decent selection I
could offer.  If all you then need is the material, and a capable EE
to spend just a few hours, might not be too much to ask the people
at LockMart if they have an interest, etc.  What is the material
needed?  How is it formed, chemical vapor deposition?  Does it
require DC?

If Jim thinks there's a cheap solution, I'd certainly like to hear
about it.

specialties it seems to me.

Except perhaps for graphene's discovery - small efforts
generally no longer work. This is a big problem - the
biggest requiring many minds and large financial

Seems in the last several years the theory has changed
and I don't know if meta-material is cheap, but its
certainly worth a discussion.  If Jack and Jim together
can work out a plausible scheme, I'd certainly be
willing to post about it in a couple of the appropriate
engineering forums to see if there are any takers.

Likewise I'd be willing to offer my Mettler H20 to
anyone willing to do an experiment.  Just what would one
do?  If you built a self-contained power supply with
remote on-off, and surrounded it with this
meta-material, does theory suggest the whole apparatus
ought to go weightless?  Seems would be VERY easy to
detect such a thing--doesn't much need precision

Metamaterials can be used to create desktop
black holes and simulate multiverses; now a
physicist is using them to prove time travel
can't happen.

In a new paper, University of Maryland professor
and metamaterial theorist Igor Smolyaninov says
mapping light distribution in a metamaterial can
serve as a model for the flow of time. The model
shows that the forward direction of time is
unrelenting; you cannot curve back on time and
go back to where you started. You just have to
build a desktop Big Bang to prove it.

Metamaterials can help with this, because
they are engineered to exhibit properties
that don't exist naturally. You can manipulate
a metamaterial to make space-like dimensions
appear time-like, Smolyaninov writes. The way
that light moves in such a metamaterial is
akin to the way that a particle moves through
spacetime (click through to Tech Review's
arXiv blog...
http://www.technologyreview.com/blog/arxiv/26614/?ref=rss
...for a more thorough explainer).

In such a metamaterial, the pattern of
light rays spreads out -- the separation
of their "world lines" increases -- as
time goes by. And the light scatters,
which is an analogue for entropy, the
thermodynamic arrow of time that tells
us things fall apart.

To test this theory, Smolyaninov and a
colleague built a Big Bang simulator,
placing plastic strips on a gold substrate.
Tech Review explains that the "light rays"
shining through it are actually plasmons
(a clump of excited electrons in a conducting
material) that propagate across the surface
of the metal. The plastic strips distort
their light.

So why does this show time travel is
impossible? Smolyaninov says that while
light rays can be curved and appear to
turn back on themselves, they would not
be in a time-like dimension when they
do so. And any light ray traveling in
a time-like dimension would not be able
to go back to its former location.

On the plus side, Smolyaninov has already
showed how metamaterials can help us study
extra-dimensional multiverses.

So even if we can't travel back in time,
maybe we could visit alternate universes,
in which the past was already different.

My loquacious, garrulous left cerebral hemisphere
had a rather circumspect verbose soliloquy, whereupon
Owlsley The Artificial Intelligence of yesteryear
masquerading as a corpus collosum did manage a flight
or two across the vast expanse of brain matter to establish
a neurological dialogue of sorts with my quieter, in-the-now,

On the outskirts of a city there's a reservoir in a
watershed among hills and trees. Sometimes late at night,
I'll drive along the narrow winding road just to see the
wildlife that comes out: owls, raccoons, foxes, bobcats,
skunks, but mostly deer come out to wander near the road's
edge. I always drive the posted 25 MPH speed limit because
I'm never in a hurry on this heavily populated watershed
at night under the trees, clouds and stars. Sometimes along
the shoulder a deer will watch the oncoming headlights.
I always lower my highbeams for their eyes as if they are
drivers themselves. Occasionally, I get a sense that they
register something otherworldly in their experience, as a
pair of lights approach, dim, pass by with a whoosh of air
and Doppler shifting receding sound.
I'm almost willing to say that there are some deer who
specifically settle in on this road's edge just to see the
night lights.  Not everyone drives the speed limit, the
results are saddening but fortunately rare in number, and
roadkill is quickly consumed.
The deer that do play this game of observation intrigue me.
I wonder what occurs for them neurologically, physiologically,
to see these strange lights at night? If they could somehow
integrate the sensory awareness of another species' technology
into their lives, how would they do it? What tools would they
employ to even remember?
I suspect they would be confined to using only the tools of
their own world; not the tools of halogen bulbs, direct
current, transmissions, and auto manufacturers.
The raccoons, however, I think might be up to something,
what with their opposable thumbs and secretive,
aggressive ways.  -- Thor's Day, 21 May 2009

....to which I replied:

Dearest Bodhisattva of Compassion,
Ultraterrestrial Prankster High-Priestess:

Thank you for that. Tat Tvam Asi.
Unfortunately, my archaic dinosaur 'puter with un-upgradeable
software is not up to the task of playing the YouTube video,
but 'Google' always comes in handy:

"As long as you are kind and there is love in your heart
A thousand hands will naturally come to your aid
As long as you are kind and there is love in your heart
You will reach out with a thousand hands to help others"

QUOTE:

Guan Yin is the bodhisattva of compassion,
http://www.taoism.net/guanyin/home.htm
revered by Buddhists as the Goddess of Mercy.
Her name is short for Guan Shi Yin. Guan means
to observe, watch, or monitor; Shi means the
world; Yin means sounds, specifically sounds
of those who suffer. Thus, Guan Yin is a
compassionate being who watches for, and
responds to, the people in the world who cry
out for help.

Bodhi means wisdom or enlightenment; sattva means
being or essence. Put the two together and you get
bodhisattva, a being who is enlightened and ready
to transcend the cycles of birth and death, but
chooses to return to the material world in order
to help other people reach the same level of
enlightenment. This is the ultimate demonstration
of pure compassion.

There is a phenomenon sweeping through Asia which is still
relatively unknown in the West. [...] It is a stunning
stage performance called Thousand-Hand Guan Yin.
[...]
The most incredible thing about the performance is that
all the dancers are deaf. They are members of the
China Disabled People's Performing Art Troupe.
None of them can hear the music - this makes their
choreography a truly amazing achievement.
The difficulties and challenges they encountered
in training are beyond imagining.

Meanwhile...

I was recently thinking about the 'vow'
that a Bodhisattva makes. A somewhat daunting,
down right terrifying sort of vow, to renounce
nirvana, final extinction, etc. for the sake of
any and all remaining conscious sentient beings
trapped in unrelenting cyclic bondage to material
reality - to remain in the cycle to help them out
of the cycle, a concept in itself, perhaps, a bit
narcissistic if it isn't truly 'selfless', which
raises all sorts of complicated psychological
meanderings of the mind. Years ago, in my mind's eye,
I imagined a short story (never wrote anything down)
about a truly ancient Bodhisattva who had returned
so many gawd damn times to whatever hell hole existence
that was populated by stubborn sentient beings, that
he (or she) was a bit frayed around the edges, worn out,
tired, having second, third, etc. thoughts about the
'old vow', thinking maybe about 'blowing off the whole
enterprise' to youthful-soul folly, wondering maybe
about forgetting the 'vow' and moving on. I think I
placed this tired Bodhisattva as the owner of a coin-
operated Laundromat in a dingy city. I don't recall
if it had any sort of tangible plot, just the basic
idea. It would make an interesting play or movie in
the right hands, maybe Zhang Jigang, David Lynch, and
Charlie Kaufman the guy who wrote Being John Malkovich.
Anyway, only someone trapped in samsaric illusory
material universe sentient looniness would even
conceive of such a goofy scenario, therefore, I bow
my head to thee, dearest Bodhisattva of Compassion,
Ultraterrestrial Prankster High Priestess, Mahatma,
etc... a true example of a contemporary Bodhisattva
of Egyptological Initiatory Contactee Experience who
never fails to make one's heart smile.

Catch ya later. --Present Moment.

Prof. Hawking most recently said that
Time Travel was only possible to the
future, because Time Travel to
the past is fraught with paradox.
He used the example of a man who
builds a time machine that takes him
back in time 2 minutes before he
'steps into the time machine.' If he
subsequently 'prevents' the man that
is his 'past self' from stepping into
the time machine, then the man who does
the time traveling cannot possibly
exist to perform this action. Paradox.

I don't know, (how could I?); and yet,
the below text reads like tortured
wishful thinking in an attempt to
evade the simultaneously unsatisfying
and wildly intriguing notion of
paradox-avoiding-bifurcating-timelines,
and replacing it with an equally
troubling contortionist's appeal to
'closed timelike curves' as long as
they meet highly specific non-disruptive
parameters that curve in on themselves.
Sort of like P.D. Ouspensky's old theory
of 'Eternal Recurrence' whose ancestor
was Metempsychosis - kind of like
Reincarnation, only closed in an eternal
loop - which ties in a bit with your other
discussion regarding free will, and/or
its complete impossibility in its
current evolutionary, illusory form...
Anyway, 'closed timelike curves' sounds
a bit like 'bifurcated timelines' to me.

Novikov self-consistency principle
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novikov_self-consistency_principle

The Novikov self-consistency principle,
also known as the Novikov self-consistency
conjecture, is a principle developed by
Russian physicist Igor Dmitriyevich Novikov
in the mid-1980s to solve the problem of
paradoxes in time travel, which is
theoretically permitted in certain solutions
of general relativity (solutions containing
what are known as closed timelike curves).
Stated simply, the Novikov consistency
principle asserts that if an event exists
that would give rise to a paradox, or to
any "change" to the past whatsoever, then
the probability of that event is zero.
In short, it says that it's impossible
to create time paradoxes.

History of the principle
Physicists have long been aware that there
are solutions to the theory of general
relativity which contain closed timelike
curves, or CTCs--see for example the
Godel metric. Novikov discussed the
possibility of CTCs in books written in
1975 and 1983, offering the opinion that
only self-consistent trips back in time
would be permitted. In a 1990 paper by
Novikov and several others, Cauchy problem
in spacetimes with closed timelike curves,
the authors state:

The only type of causality violation that
the authors would find unacceptable is
 that embodied in the science-fiction
concept of going backward in time and
killing one's younger self ("changing the
past"). Some years ago one of us
 (Novikov10) briefly considered the
possibility that CTCs might exist and
argued that they cannot entail this type
of causality violation: Events on a CTC
are already guaranteed to be self-consistent,
Novikov argued; they influence each other
 around a closed curve in a self-adjusted,
 cyclical, self-consistent way. The other
authors recently have arrived at the
 same viewpoint.

We shall embody this viewpoint in a principle
of self-consistency, which states that the only
solutions to the laws of physics that can occur
locally in the real Universe are those which
 are globally self-consistent. This principle
allows one to build a local solution to the
equations of physics only if that local solution
can be extended to a part of a (not necessarily
unique) global solution, which is well defined
 throughout the nonsingular regions of
 the spacetime.

Among the coauthors of this 1990 paper were Kip Thorne,
Mike Morris, and Ulvi Yurtsever, who in 1988 had
stirred up renewed interest in the subject of time
travel in general relativity with their paper Wormholes,
Time Machines, and the Weak Energy Condition, which
showed that a new general relativity solution known
as a traversable wormhole could lead to closed timelike
curves, and unlike previous CTC-containing solutions
it did not require unrealistic conditions for the
universe as a whole. After discussions with another
coauthor of the 1990 paper, John Friedman, they
convinced themselves that time travel need not lead
to unresolvable paradoxes, regardless of what type
of object was sent through the wormhole.

In response, another physicist named Joseph Polchinski
sent them a letter in which he argued that one could
avoid questions of free will by considering a
potentially paradoxical situation involving a billiard
ball sent through a wormhole which sends it back in
time. In this scenario, the ball is fired into a
wormhole at an angle such that, if it continues along
that path, it will exit the wormhole in the past at
just the right angle to collide with its earlier self,
thereby knocking it off course and preventing it from
entering the wormhole in the first place.
Thorne deemed this problem "Polchinski's paradox".

After considering the problem, two students at
Caltech (where Thorne taught), Fernando Echeverria
and Gunnar Klinkhammer, were able to find a solution
beginning with the original billiard ball trajectory
proposed by Polchinski which managed to avoid any
inconsistencies. In this situation, the billiard ball
emerges from the future at a different angle than
the one used to generate the paradox, and delivers
its younger self a glancing blow instead of knocking
it completely away from the wormhole, a blow which
changes its trajectory in just the right way so that
it will travel back in time with the angle required
to deliver its younger self this glancing blow.
Echeverria and Klinkhammer actually found that
there was more than one self-consistent solution,
with slightly different angles for the glancing
blow in each case. Later analysis by Thorne and
Robert Forward showed that for certain initial
trajectories of the billiard ball, there could
actually be an infinite number of self-consistent
solutions.

Echeverria, Klinkhammer and Thorne published a
paper discussing these results in 1991; in
addition, they reported that they had tried to
see if they could find any initial conditions
for the billiard ball for which there were no
self-consistent extensions, but were unable to
do so. Thus it is plausible that there exist
self-consistent extensions for every possible
initial trajectory, although this has not been
proven. This only applies to initial conditions
which are outside of the chronology-violating
region of spacetime, which is bounded by a
Cauchy horizon. This could mean that the Novikov
self-consistency principle does not actually
place any constraints on systems outside of the
region of spacetime where time travel is
possible, only inside it. [...] CONT...
