In the wake of the recent data suggesting that subatomic muon neutrinos can travel faster than light, teams at two other particle accelerators in the U.S. and Japan plan to repeat the experiments that took place at the particle accelerator OPERA (Oscillation Project with Emulsion-tRacking Apparatus) in Italy’s underground Gran Sasso National Laboratory.
This week’s Science describes the incredulity of many physicists about the initial discovery. “Jim Al-Khalili, a theorist at the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom, even vowed to eat his boxer shorts on live television if the result holds up,” writes Adrian Cho.
