Dr. David Awschalom and his team at U.C. Santa Barbara are working to make quantum computers cheap and easy to use by exploiting the imperfect semiconductors that hinder traditional computing.

A few weeks ago, Nature published a paper from Dr. David Awschalom and his team at the University of California, Santa Barbara. In that paper, they showed that defects in crystals of silicon carbide can function at room temperature as ‘quantum bits,’ which are the basic building blocks of a quantum computer.

I had a chance to speak with Dr. Awschalom on the phone and ask him a few questions about the implications of his work, and where it will go next.
