From time to time, thousands of people throughout the world have come forward claiming to have witnessed UFOs (Unidentified Flying Objects), alien abductions or similar paranormal phenomena. Majority of such stories with no proof have been discarded as publicity stunts whilst some cases with proof have received wide media attention. Looking at the facts and pictures that have been collected over the years through researches, we cannot say that these stories about UFOs and Aliens are mere fiction.
However, over the last couple of decades, most sci-fi writers have used UFO sightings and alien abductions as the subject matter of their work. Also movies like Avatar, Aliens in the attic and Koi Mil Gaya have been based on the very subject and their remarkable success at box-office proves the fact that people are largely curious about UFO and alien-stories, whether they are fact or fiction. In the case of Sri Lanka, none of the claims on UFO sightings have been taken ‘seriously’ so far. Even the most recent incident, reported on September 29, failed to draw much attention, as usual.
H. R. Muthubanda of Mahiyanganaya (Kovilyaya) not only sighted the alleged UFO incident, but also recorded it via his mobile phone which he released to the media later that day. He has observed a strange object, what he describes as an object which looked like a ‘cart wheel’ floating about two feet above the ground. According to him, the mysterious object has been shining and though he wanted to have a closer look at it, he was afraid to approach it. After about 30 seconds the object had vanished.
