These mysterious objects, which produce powerful jets of gas, are the glue that holds galaxies together with their immense gravity.
But not all supermassive black holes are the same.
Some send out jets like bright beacons that extend across the universe, while others struggle to penetrate the edge of their galaxies – and now a group of scientists think they know why.
