Back in the summer of 1985, Ireland was rife with religious apparitions popping up all over the country causing a media frenzy.

The series of apparitions then saw thousands of people flock to newly deemed holy sites.

But how many reported apparitions where there and were they real? We give you the lowdown.=

After people started reporting that they'd seen the Virgin Mary, appear, or statues of her move in the summer of 1985, the phenomenon was quickly labelled 'moving statues' by media.

 

THE very first apparition of the Virgin Mary occurred long before the Moving Statue mania hit.

 

She was seen in 1879 by 13 witnesses at Knock Shrine in Co Mayo which later went on to become a popular site for pilgrimages and was even visited by the Pope in 1979 and most recently last year.
