Star Trek fans know it well. The fictional, futuristic, Sausalito-based Starfleet Academy that has long been a staple of Trekkie lore --- a place where Starfleet cadets have their mettle tested time and again.
In real life, we are likely centuries away from starship commanders and starfleet admirals, if there are ever going to be such. But here are a few reasons why establishing a starship academy in this current era would serve humanity well.
