After the end of WWII in 1946, America's Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal ordered a large Antarctic Expedition called Operation Highjump under the command of U. S. Navy Admiral Richard E. Byrd. On August 26, 1946, Operation Highjump's large naval force of 4,000 personnel designated Task Force 68 launched with the flagship USS Mount Olympus, the aircraft carrier USS Philippine Sea, thirteen U. S. Navy support ships, six helicopters, six flying boats, two seaplane tenders and fifteen other aircraft. The armada arrived in the Ross Sea on December 31, 1946, and after aerial explorations and recording ten new mountain ranges, the expedition was suddenly terminated at the end of February 1947, six months earlier than planned. The entire armada returned to the United States under mysterious circumstances never fully explained to the public.
