Rise and shine, New Horizons. A mission to study Pluto will be taken out of hibernation on Saturday 6 December as the probe begins its final approach to the dwarf planet at the edge of our solar system.

It has been a long ride. When the New Horizons probe launched in 2006, Pluto was still considered a full planet – its status was changed to "dwarf planet" later that year. Now the probe has nearly completed the 4.76 billion kilometre journey to this remote and icy world.
