IBM now has 18 quantum computers, an increase from three this quarter that underscores the company's effort to take advantage of a revolutionary type of computing. Dario Gil, head of IBM Research and an advocate for his quantum computing effort, revealed the number at the Big Blue & # 39; s Think conference on Wednesday.
Eighteen quantum computers may not seem like much. But since each is a difficult device to handle cooled to a fraction of a degree above absolute zero and operated by Ph.D. researchers, it's actually a fairly large fleet. In comparison, Google's quantum computer lab near Santa Barbara, California has only five machines, and Honeywell has only six quantum computers.
