Three out of four of the fundamental forces of nature have been successfully unified by the Standard Model of particle physics. The fourth, gravity, remains elusive, defying every traditional description. Now Erik Verlinde, a Dutch theoretical physicist, is considering the possibility that gravity might not be a fundamental force at all, but rather an emergent property of the deeper underlying structure of the universe.
