It might be described as one of the great galactic mysteries. Something distinctly odd is going on tens of thousands of light years away, at the heart of our gigantic galaxy, the Milky Way.
Sophisticated satellite measurements reveal that, deep within the galactic centre, an estimated 16 billion tonnes of antimatter is being annihilated every second.
‘‘This is very exciting because it means that antimatter exists in space — it’s not completely gone,’’ says distinguished particle physicist Joss Bland-Hawthorn, a federation fellow in the school of physics at Sydney University and Leverhulme professor at Oxford University.
