Scientists on the hunt for aliens are searching for a new type of signal.

The experts think alien life could be sending us a message via low uncharted frequencies.

SETI - the search for extraterrestrial intelligence - usually listens out for higher frequencies.

Researchers from SETI's Breakthrough Listen project are using the European Low Frequency Array of radio telescopes to conduct their search.

The project involves lots of radio telescopes stretched over hundreds of kilometers.

Data is collected from multiple countries including France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

The project has already listened to 1.6 million star systems.

This is the first time the researchers are looking out for megahertz radio frequencies.

Earth's atmosphere is said to interfere with frequencies lower than 1.42 GHz.

The interference can it hard to hear signals.

Experts think they've been able to overcome this issue by using a telescope that allows for clear listening.
