Just as scientists have identified parallels to comprehend the frigid Mars-like conditions in Antarctica, there are ways in which they could develop methods to communicate with extraterrestrial beings.

SETI Institute scientists have been experimenting with a novel way to understand terrestrial "non-human intelligence" communication systems.

They have collaborated with the University of California Davis and the Alaska Whale Foundation to decipher humpback whale communication systems.

The Whale-SETI team aims to apply lessons learned from this research to “develop intelligence filters for the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.”

Interestingly, SETI’s recent press release reports a "close encounter" with a non-human intellect - a humpback whale named Twain.
