A new study has confirmed that NASA's Perseverance rover has detected ancient lake sediments on Mars, revealing that the red planet was once home to a large body of water.
The study, published in the journal Science Advances, was based on data collected by the rover's RIMFAX radar instrument, which can scan the subsurface of Mars up to 65 feet (20 meters) deep.
The rover, which landed in Jerezo Crater in February 2021, used the radar to explore the crater floor and the nearby delta region, where orbital images had suggested the presence of sedimentary deposits.
The radar data showed clear evidence of layers of soil sediments that were transported and deposited by water, forming a lake and a delta in the ancient past.
