Hopes of discovering extraterrestrial life were previously tied to the potential subsurface ocean beneath the thick icy surface of Titan, Saturn's largest moon.

Titan's ocean, with a projected volume more than 12 times that of Earth's, was thought to be capable of harboring life.

However, a recent research headed by astrobiologist Catherine Neish of Western University has totally ruled this out.

The study determined that Titan's ocean is likely to be a "non-habitable environment" due to a lack of amino acids, which are necessary building blocks for the formation of life.

“Unfortunately, we will now need to be a little less optimistic when searching for extraterrestrial lifeforms within our own Solar System,” said Neish.
