China’s latest underwater unmanned systems have been described as disruptive and intelligent in a new military journal article. Featured during the September 3 parade in Beijing marking the 80th anniversary of victory over Japan, the submersibles reportedly possess zero-radius turning manoeuvrability, allowing them to operate smoothly in complex maritime conditions.

The journal notes they function below 90 decibels to avoid sonar detection and can be paired with submarine-launched missiles, smart mines, or even “mother-daughter” unmanned vehicles to create a multilayered strike network.

The parade also highlighted China’s expanding arsenal, from intercontinental ballistic missiles to drones and carrier-based aircraft.
