Scientists at The University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University have successfully grown and harvested the first-ever crop of chickpeas in simulated “moon dirt.”

As NASA prepares for the Artemis mission, this study offers a potential solution for long-term food sustainability on the Moon.

“The research is about understanding the viability of growing crops on the moon. “How do we transform this regolith into soil? What kinds of natural mechanisms can cause this conversion?” said Sara Santos, postdoctoral fellow at the University of Texas Institute for Geophysics (UTIG) at the Jackson School of Geosciences.
