Tucked away deep into the Utah desert and wilderness stands a tall metal structure or monolith. Sticking out like a sore thumb among the red desert rock, scientists are scratching their heads wondering how it arrived there.

The monolith was discovered by the Utah Department of Public Safety Aero Bureau (DPS), who was working with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources as they tried to count big horn sheep in the area.

As they flew above the region in a helicopter, one of the biologists on board noticed the strange metal object, causing the team to further investigate it.

"One of the biologists is the one who spotted it and we just happened to fly directly over the top of it," pilot Bret Hutchings, who flew the helicopter over the site, told local news station KSLTV.
