The military intelligence officer leading the official investigation into UFOs is kept awake at night by the threat of 'extra-terrestrial technical surprise'.
Dr Sean Kirkpatrick is director of the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office which is probing 800 reported close encounters with US military personnel dating back decades.
It was set up by US Congress last year to coordinate efforts across federal agencies to 'detect, identify and attribute' mystery objects in the air, underwater and outer space which could pose threats to national security.
Dr Kirkpatrick believes the threat of an extraterrestrial attack is real as it is 'statistically unrealistic' to think that aliens do not exist somewhere in the universe.
