Tech billionaires, including Mark Zuckerberg, Sam Altman, and Reid Hoffman, among others, are reportedly building or buying bunkers, secret compounds, and “apocalypse insurance” plans.

This has led people to wonder if they know something we don’t, such as a coming disaster caused by artificial intelligence (AI), climate change, or war. However, a new report by the BBC has found that such fears are likely exaggerated or unfounded.

Experts on the subject tend to agree that talk of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), or AI as smart as or smarter than humans, may be more hype and marketing than imminent reality.

However, that isn’t stopping billionaires from “investing” in remote safe houses and bunkers. Zuckerberg, for example, has been building a massive compound in Hawaii, reportedly with a huge underground shelter, though he denies it’s a “doomsday bunker.”

Other tech figures, like LinkedIn’s Reid Hoffman, openly admit to owning “apocalypse insurance” properties (especially in New Zealand). Understandably, this behavior fuels public speculation that the ultra-rich are preparing for social collapse, climate disaster, or rogue AI.
